Reports are circulating that rapper/actress Queen Latifah has come out of the closet after years of sidestepping questions about her sexuality. But Latifah — real name Dana Owens — hasn’t actually made any statement at all about her personal life. Instead, several sites are jumping to the conclusion that she’s gay simply because she’s agreed to headling the 2012 annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival.
“This will be Queen Latifah’s first-ever engagement at a Pride celebration anywhere in the world,” reads a press release from Long Beach Pride.
“For her to make her worldwide Pride debut here in Long Beach is a tremendous testament to the popularity of our celebration and the strength of our community,” says LBP co-president Pat Crosby.
What isn’t said is anything about Latifah’s sexuality. And, as The New Civil Rights Movement points out, Whitney Houston performed at New York’s 1999 Gay Pride Festival, Jennifer Lopez at the 2006 NYC Pride Pier Dance and Katy Perry marched in the 2011 NYC Gay Pride Festival. So attendance hardly equals an admission.
Though, Chris Spargo at Logo adds, “It could mean nothing or it could mean Miss Latifah will have have a big announcement next weekend. Stay tuned.”
