Peter Capaldi is about to debut as the 12th regeneration of “Doctor Who.” Will he soon be getting a new companion? According to one report, that answer is yes.
U.K.’s Mirror newspaper reports that a source tells them Coleman is leaving her role as Clara Oswald, companion to the Doctor, in the 2014 Christmas special episode.
“The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out,” says the source. “By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”
The source adds, “It was very much a mutual decision. It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”
While there have been only 12 Doctors so far in the history of the long-running BBC sci-fi series, there are have dozens of companions, including Billie Piper, Alex Kingston and Karen Gillan, with most companions lasting no longer than one or two seasons.
Coleman’s Clara was introduced in late 2012 and the latest season of “Doctor Who” answered the question of where Clara came from and what purpose she serves in the Doctor’s life, so perhaps her time with the Doctor has come to its natural conclusion.
Zap2it has reached out to the BBC for comment and have not heard back yet.
