Next time you create a piece of “Doctor Who” fan art, bear in mind that it’s entirely possible Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and executive producer Steven Moffat will see it.
The three of them spoke to Zap2it and other media outlets at a press conference during the “Doctor Who” world tour stop in New York City when the topic of the online fandom came up. “I think trying to assess Doctor Who’s audience from its online community would be like trying to assess world affairs from the comment sections below newspapers,” Moffat says. “I had this conversation, — name-dropping, [‘The Walking Dead’ executive producer] Gale Anne Hurd — about you can’t mistake Twitter for the voice of the audience.”
He continues, “But let’s look at the positive side of it. Let’s look at the amazing response — our new title sequence. Beautiful new title sequence which I think is stunning is online Doctor Who fandom.” A fan created their version of a Season 8 opening credits sequence, which Moffat saw. “I thought it was the only new idea for a ‘Doctor Who’ title scene since 1963. And we got in touch and we said ‘OK, we’re gonna do that one.'” The finished product, which appears in the Season 8 premiere, is very different from what fans are used to.
The cast and crew also saw that fan trailer featuring Capaldi’s Doctor in the rain. In fact, it earned the creator a very special invitation from the show. “[He] came down to set as well and spent the day watching as a result of something that he did at home,” Coleman shares. Capaldi adds, “The level of creativity is extraordinary and the constant use of taking clips and mashing them up and putting different music and doing their own versions of the same thing.”
The show hasn’t just inspired art, though. “It has turned people into actors, it has turned people into writers, it has turned people into scientists,” Moffat says. “That’s an extraordinary thing.”
