Doug Jones has become something of a Guillermo del Toro movie staple, even if his isn’t a name that many recognize. The actor played Abe Sapien, Chamberlain and the Angel of Death in “Hellboy” and “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” the Faun and Pale Man in “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Long Jon #2 in “Mimic.” Strangely, del Toro didn’t find a role for him in the upcoming “Pacific Rim,” and Zap2it set out to find the answer why.
“I’m not in ‘Pacific Rim,’ the reason being Guillermo del Toro loves me in makeups, and there were no people in makeups in this movie,” Jones explains of the CGI-heavy movie. “That’s our answer. And he doesn’t think of me as a person — unfortunately, Guillermo.”
But that’s not to say another Jones and del Toro collaboration isn’t going to happen in the future. With Ron Perlman and del Toro teaming up again in “Pacific Rim,” there’s been a lot of talk of a “Hellboy 3″ finally coming to fruition. Perlman and del Toro say the cast is on board for a third, but Jones doesn’t seem to think the film is going to happen in the near future.
“From your lips to God’s ears. I want a ‘Hellboy 3′ more than I can say,” he admits. While a Kickstarter isn’t likely for the project, Jones says it’s just a matter of finding a studio willing to fund it. “‘Hellboy 1′ was Sony Pictures, ‘Hellboy 2′ was Universal Pictures, and it’s been hard for us to keep a studio wanting us to come back,” Jones explains. “Now those movies made enough money to warrant another sequel, but not enough to demand one. I think that’s why we need to really schmooze and romance another studio now. … I’m ever hopeful.”
“Pacific Rim” comes out July 12.
