Joanne Froggatt on Anna and Bates:
“They both know they’re not quite being honest with each other, they
can sense it. Anna, in her heart of hearts, she really does feel that
Mr. Bates hasn’t done this thing because she doesn’t think Mr. Bates
knows it was Mr. Green who raped her. However, she has these doubts and
it just doesn’t leave her. It’s something that sort of haunts her in
Season 5. It’s this added anxiety on top of what else she’s going

Michelle Dockery on Lady Mary: “She’s very complex. I think she’s impulsive, she makes these
decisions and then once she goes through with it, she realizes it wasn’t
quite the right decision. This series she is quite impulsive. She’s
embracing her new life, really. She’s through the grief now and I kind
of see Series 5 as the new Mary. With that she’s got a bit of her bite
back that we had in Series 1, which I enjoyed playing. … This series
is a lot more fun.”

Allen Leech on Season 5 in general: “The stories have become more personal. This year they are such personal journeys for each character,
it’s harder to give spoilers. It’s an individual journey for each
character more so than it ever has been before.”

Froggatt on Season 5: “There’s drama, love, comedy, there’s all of those elements there
really, really strongly. I’m really proud of Season 5. Julian has done
an amazing job, it’s a real mixture of all of those things. … I think
everyone is going to really enjoy Season 5.”

Dockery on new character Lady Anstruther: “She’s a troublemaker. She comes to the house and she creates havoc.”

Leech on the Mary-Branson friendship: “In Series 5, they become closer because they become confidants. They’re after the same thing for Downton, which is sustainability. They
want to see Downton continue into the future, not only for themselves
but obviously for their offspring. You definitely get a sense that they come
together on a united front with the idea of making sure that Downton’s
going to be around a lot longer than even while they’re around. In that,
they solidify their friendship as well.”

EP Neame on Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti: “They’re not in Season 5, but they may well be in future seasons of the show.”

“Downton Abbey” premieres Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS.
