One of the most-talked about games at E3 2013 is “Destiny,” the first new console title from Bungie since they signed their 10-year publishing deal with Activision Blizzard. It’s also their first new IP (Intellectual Property) since leaving the “Halo” series.
“Destiny” takes place hundreds of years in the future, after humans have colonized much of the solar system. However, a mysterious event has dissolved the colonies and left the human race fighting extinction. All that remains is those who stayed on earth, however hostile alien forces have occupied much of the planet and are closing in on the last human city. The player takes on the role of a guardian of that city. Their job is simple, kill the aliens before they kill humanity.
The demonstration that developers played for Zap2it featured two such guardians working together to enter “Old Russia,” which has been overthrown by an alien race called The Fallen.
Fans of the “Halo” franchise will be happy that the mechanics, by and large, are the same as Bungie spent many years developing their first-person shooter style.
That doesn’t make this some kind of “Halo” knock-off, though. Many of the features, including weapons that can be upgraded, make for a far more detailed game. There’s also little things, like the ghost. A ghost is a small mechanical device with a personality. In the demo, the ghost not only acts as a light when you can’t see, but it is also able to fix malfunctioning equipment and restore electricity to areas of the map. It also had a couple little jokes to lighten the mood.
Players will be able to choose a class for their character, each of which comes with a special “power.” The classes mentioned in the demo were Titan, Warlock and Hunter. The TItan’s power was a pretty mean looking ground punch.
Bungie still hasn’t offered a release date, other than to say “Destiny” will be out in 2014. It will be released on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
