“Orange Is The New Black” star Laverne Cox made Emmy history Thursday (July 10), becoming the first transgender person nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
Zap2it and fans of the show probably aren’t surprised the Time magazine cover subject secured a nomination. The actress’ role as Sophia Burset on the hit Netflix show was a breakout among the many players of “OITNB.”
Cox is nominated in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category, along with her fellow ladies of Litchfield Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba.
GLAAD President and CEO
Sarah Kate Ellis says of Cox’s barrier breaking nomination, “Today,
countless transgender youth will hear the message that they can be who
they are and still achieve their dreams — nothing is out of reach.
Laverne’s success on a hit series is a clear indication that audiences
are ready for more trans
characters on television.”
The 2014 Emmy Awards will air Monday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
