While the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the same-sex marriage debate, many celebrities have changed their profile photo on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to one version or another of the red equal sign your friends are sporting.
It’s a show of support for the marriage equality movement. The image originated with the Human Rights Campaign, which changed their usual yellow equal sign over a blue background to a pink equal sign over a red background in an effort to unify supporters of its cause: advocating for the rights of lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender people.
“Partners” star Sophia Bush tweeted a link to the HRC’s “Stand for Marriage” site, and wrote, “My profile is red b/c I am joining @HRC in support of marriage equality during the Supreme Court hearings … Join us!”
The court heard arguments Tuesday (March 27) in the case of California’s Prop. 8, which voters passed in 2008 and a federal district court overturned in 2010. The ballot initiative called for an amendment to the state’s Constitution banning gay marriage. Wednesday (March 28) the Supreme Court Justices heard arguments regarding the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which places a federal definition on marriage as being between a man and a woman.
