The ultimate choice sits before you, moviegoers of America: Will you go see “Guardians of the Galaxy” when it hits theaters, or “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Focus Features just revealed that “Fifty Shades” will go head-to-head with “Guardians” when it premieres on Aug. 1, 2014
“Guardians” and “Fifty Shades” might seem like they’re on opposite ends of the Hollywood spectrum, but they’re actually more similar than one would think. Though both properties are highly anticipated, they both represent uncharted territory for their studios. “Guardians of the Galaxy” is a CGI-heavy space epic featuring characters entirely new — and untested — to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then there’s “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which was a best-selling “mommy porn” novel that may or may not translate well on the big screen in all its BDSM glory.
Regardless of your interest level in these two projects, there’s no denying that it will be interesting to see how they play out on the big screen. Will they be massive successes or total disasters? Will director Sam Taylor-Johnson play up “Fifty Shades'” hardcore sex scenes, or cater to a wider audience by toning them down? Just how will Marvel represent characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot in “Guardians of the Galaxy” without them seeming like cartoons? Let’s just say it’s going to be hard to choose between the two now that Focus Features has announced “Fifty Shades of Grey” will be coming out on the same day as “Guardians.”
Still, choose we must. Vote below on which movie you’ll see first of the two, and let us know why in the comments below.
