Barney Bush, widely considered to be the “first dog” of President George W. Bush’s two terms in office, has passed away after suffering from lymphoma. The announcement was made by the former president on his Facebook account. According to President Bush, “After twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness.”
Barney was born only two months before Bush was elected to his first term as president. Of the Scottish Terrier, the president said, “Barney greeted Queens, Heads of State, and Prime Ministers. He was always polite and never jumped in their laps. Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.”
The president also released an oil painting he did of Barney, signed “43,” as Bush was the nation’s 43rd president. According to an article in New York Magazine last year, the president had taken up painting as a hobby since leaving office.
