FOX is getting into the live musical game with a production of “Grease” set for 2015.
The network of “Glee” will partner with Paramount Television for the three-hour live production (Paramount owns the rights to “Grease”). The production will feature songs from the original 1971 musical, including “Summer Nights” and “We Go Together,” and the 1978 movie, which featured a pair of original tunes, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One That I Want.”
FOX and Paramount also say the live production will “reimagine some of the story’s most memorable moments and characters.”
“‘Grease’ is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told — and we can’t wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event,” says Shana C. Waterman, head of event series for FOX. “Its iconic characters and addictive songs make it the perfect fit for FOX, and we’re going to give it the kind of star power and production quality to make every Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie out there want to get up and sing along.”
Casting and a production team haven’t been nailed down yet. FOX’s announcement comes after NBC scored big ratings with its live “Sound of Music” special last fall; NBC is planning a production of “Peter Pan” for fall 2014.
