Sorry Jason Voorhees, creepy bad guy of “Friday the 13th” movie franchise fame. You’re scary and all, but apparently not scary enough to have an official mental condition named in honor of people fearing you. But, there are people who have an absolute horror of Friday the 13th, the day, and those people have an officially named disorder: Friggatriskaidekaphobia.
Why fear a day? Well, Friday the 13th isn’t just any day — it is steeped in cultural traditions that paint the combination of a Friday with the 13th day of the month as unlucky — a day on which bad things happen, such as being chased by hockey mask-wearing guys with meat cleavers.
Frigga is, of course, an homage to the Norse goddess Frigga for which Friday was named. The rest of the word — triskaidekaphobia — means fear of the number 13. And, per the Stress Management and Phobia Institute, an extimated 17 to 21 million people are affected by Friggatriskaidekaphobia despite the fact that statistics show there are actually fewer accidents on Friday the 13th. Though, the Dutch Centre for Insurance Studies posits the lower number is a product of superstitious people going out of their way to be careful.
What about you — are you at all wary on Friday the 13th?
