The first look at the new “From Dusk Till Dawn” TV series has arrived. Coming to Robert Rodriguez‘s El Rey Network, the small screen adaptation of his 1996 film of the same name looks as stylized and frenetic as one would expect. The series will premiere on March 11, and now viewers can get a taste of the project through its trailer.
The plot seems like it will generally stick pretty closely to the film, though as Rodriguez told critics at 2014 TCA winter press tour, it will go “wider [and] deeper” as well. The series tells the story of brothers and fugitives Richie Gecko (D.J. Cotrona) and Seth Gecko (Zane Holtz) who are on the run. They kidnap the family of pastor Jacob Fuller (Robert Patrick) and hiding out in a seedy strip club that ends up being overrun by vampires.
“I delved a little deeper into Mesoamerican mythology, Aztec and Mayan mythologies, where a vampire culture could have existed back then, and found fascinating stuff that I only hinted at in the movie,” Rodriguez said of the show at press tour. “I wished I could have explored it further, but there was no time in the movie. So I really wanted to go back and enrich that whole experience. If the film was the short story, this series is the novel.”
He added, “It’s much more like reading a novel vs. what might have been in the Reader’s Digest version, cut down. It’s a much richer experience, and we tell it in a way so it only expands to go into [future] seasons.”
