If casting on “Scandal” had gone just a little bit differently, it could have been Gabrielle Union starring as Olivia Pope instead of Kerry Washington. Instead, Union lost the role but went on to have renewed faith in the television industry.
“I said to myself, ‘Oh my God, these roles are out there,'” Union tells the Associated Press. “It showed me that you don’t have to settle. Luckily, the success of her and the show bred more work. Just from the audition process, I knew that I couldn’t go backward.”
Union went on to get her own show anyways: BET’s “Being Mary Jane.” It premieres as a two-hour movie on July 2 and then will come back to the network in January with eight more episodes.
“I didn’t get ‘Scandal,’ but I got something better — which is my own show. It’s all about building a legacy. This new opportunity is something I feel that can grow,” she says. “If you loved me for one thing and may not have liked me in something else, this role gives the audience a chance to see that I can do more than one thing.”
“Being Mary Jane” premieres tonight on BET at 10:30 p.m.
