gabrielle union getty Gabrielle Union on Rihanna's 'Man Down': 'I tried to shoot my rapist'Fittingly, Rihanna‘s controversial music video for “Man Down,” comes to us around the same time that the iconic film “Thelma and Louise” celebrates its 20th anniversary.

]]>Susan Sarandon‘s character shoots and kills a man as he attempts to rape her friend. In “Man Down,” RiRi also shoots and kills a man after he rapes her. The music video has angered many, including the Parents Television Council, but has also empowered and moved fans. Rihanna spoke out against the controversy, saying: “I’m a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! What’s up with everybody wantin me to be a parent? I’m just a girl, I can only be your/our voice! Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents! And this is why! Cuz we turn the other cheek!” Now, actress Gabrielle Union is speaking out in support of the subject matter. Union has been open regarding her experience with rape but until now, hadn’t gone into details regarding her own attempt at murder. “Saw ‘Man Down’ by @rihanna,” she tweeted on Saturday (June 4). “Every victim/survivor of rape is unique, including how they THINK they’d like justice 2 be handed out. “Durin my rape I tried 2 shoot my rapist, bt I missed. Over the yrs I realized tht killin my rapist wouldve added insult 2 injury. The DESIRE 2 kill someone whose abused/raped u is understandable, bt unless its self defense n the moment 2 save ur life, just ADDS 2 ur troubles. I repeat SELF DEFENSE 2 save urself/protect urself, I’m ALL 4. Otherwise victim/survivor taken justice N2 ur own hands w/ violence=MO trouble 4 U!!” While the actress doesn’t condone violence, she does applaud Rihanna’s effort to spread a worthy message. “#mandown video did a GREAT job of getting the ENTIRE world TALKING abt RAPE. I hope that it leads 2 HEALING & PREVENTS RAPE.” [All tweets sic] When asked by a follower who the man was behind her rape, Union responded: “Stranger who robbed the store I worked at. He put his gun dwn during the rape & asked me 2 [hand] it 2 him.” Rihanna has yet to respond to Union’s story. For now, she’s busy on her “Loud” North American tour performing in Toronto, ON on Tuesday (June 7). In an odd coincidence, “Thelma and Louis” stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are also in Toronto this evening, discussing their iconic 1991 film.
