“Game of Thrones'” Facebook game, “Game of Thrones Ascent,” just got an intriguing new ally. Zynga has announced it’s partnered with HBO and game developer Disruptor Beam to bring the social media game to a whole new audience.
“Ascent” launched in beta testing back in February, and since there have been more than 500,000 total installs. The game allows users to play a noble in Westeros during the tumultuous time “Game of Thrones” is set in, and it parallels the events depicted in the show. By partnering with Zynga, the company responsible for games like “Words With Friends” and “Farmville,” “Ascent” will now be available to a larger audience.
“One thing that I’ve learned in my years of starting and building companies is that gaming companies cannot always be solely responsible for 100 percent of their ‘hits,'” Disruptor Beam’s John Radoff writes in a Zynga blog post. “Partnerships are integral to the success of any game company and any game, so we are thrilled to now be working with the amazing team at Zynga to move into the next phase for Game of Thrones Ascent!”
According to the “Game of Thrones Ascent” Facebook page, users’ guests begin “in the days before the mysterious death of the King’s Hand. Your decisions impact how the story unfolds! Are you a fosterling or a highborn bastard? Do you follow the Old Ways or worship The Seven? Shape your identity within the world of Westeros! Swear Fealty to one of the great houses – Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, or Greyjoy – and consort with familiar characters.”
“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays on HBO at 9 p.m. ET.
