HBO has delivered a very exciting early holiday gift for “Game of Thrones” fans. Tucked in a trailer teasing the network’s upcoming content is a first look at the fantasy series’ upcoming fourth season.
At first glance, the trailer doesn’t seem to show much. A person on horseback races toward a massive structure in a desert. Tyrion walks in shackles. Joffrey ponders. A clean-shaven Jaime Lannister flips through a book. Sansa looks happy. But on closer examination, these actually are some of the key moments from Season 4.
If you want to remain unspoiled for Season 4, don’t keep reading about the context of these scenes. Season 4 teases are below. You’ve been warned!
Tyrion has made no secret of his dislike of Joffrey in previous seasons, and that backfires in Season 4. After something happens to the young king, Tyrion is made the top suspect. That’s why he’s in shackles, though fans of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” books will be surprised to see Sansa in the background.
King Joffrey is doing a lot more than just pondering and looking pensive in this photo. In this scene from the Royal Wedding, fans should pay specific attention to the grapes in front of the king and the fact that Lady Olenna, the Queen of Thorns, is walking away. Those details are pretty important farther down the road.
This version of Jaime Lannister looks quite different than the one fans were used to seeing in Season 3. He’s clean-shaven, has short hair and has a fake gold hand to replace the one he lost last season. As for the book he’s flipping through, it’s the White Book, which the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard is in charge of maintaining.
One thing’s certain about this shot of Sansa: She’s not in King’s Landing anymore. Based on the smile (smile!!) on her face, Sansa doesn’t seem to have left the home of King Joffrey against her will. If we’re not mistaken, this looks like it could be a familiar location.
As for this … we’re not sure. Is it Daenerys’ assault on Meereen? The arrival of the Red Viper? A first look at Dorne? Whatever it is, it’s sure to be great.
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 will premiere in Spring 2014.
