“Game of Thrones” is heading back to San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 25 with a jam-packed panel, and it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest events of the annual geek extravaganza.
Stars Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell), John Bradley (Samwell Tarley), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Rory McCann (Sandor “The Hound” Clegane), Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) will all be in attendance, as well as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and author George R.R. Martin. Seeing that panel alone should be a treat for all those who make it into Hall H, regardless of what is discussed.
Season 5 isn’t slated to start filming until after Comic-Con is over, so don’t expect “Game of Thrones” to break its trend of not showing new footage during its panel. With that being said, here are some moments we’re crossing our fingers take place during the 1:40 p.m. PT event.
1. The Season 5 cast gets announced
There have been rumors swirling of the new characters who will be introduced in Season 5, and what better place to announce the actors who will be playing them than at Comic-Con? “Game of Thrones” pulled a similar stunt in between Seasons 2 and 3 with a sizzle reel introducing the new cast members, and it’s expected that the same will happen this year.
2. Dorne is teased
Beyond allowing fans to show their love for Pascal’s turn as the Red Viper, hopefully the actor has a larger purpose to play Comic-Con. His character introduced “Game of Thrones” audiences to the concept of a Dornishman, and in Season 5 the series is heading to Dorne. We hope that his presence at Comic-Con means panel attendees will learn a lot more about this new Westeros setting, and maybe even see some concept art.
3. The Lady Stoneheart of it is addressed
The best part about Comic-Con is that it gives fans the opportunity to ask their questions directly to the casts and creators of their favorite shows. That’s why it would be a huge surprise if some “A Song of Ice and Fire” nerd didn’t ask about the omission of Lady Stoneheart in Season 4. We want answers!
4. Jon Snow and Ygritte say goodbye (again)
Yes, Jon and Ygritte had a very sad farewell in “The Watchers on the Wall,” but is that enough? Harington and Leslie will be reunited during the Hall H panel, so fingers crossed they address their characters’ ill-fated love story again for the fans.
5. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”
There is no panel for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” at Comic-Con in 2014, but we can’t help but notice that two of its upcoming stars — Dormer and Christie — are on the “Game of Thrones” panel. They should take advantage of that and tease some of the movie while “Hunger Games” fans are busy waiting in line to watch the new trailer at the Samsung Galaxy Experience. We’d also happily accept “Star Wars: Episode VII” information, if Ms. Christie is so inclined.
