George Lopez has found his way back to television.
FX has announced that they’ve ordered a hour-hour sitcom starring and co-created by the comedian entitled “Saint George.” According to the release, the ensemble comedy “revolves around the chaotic life of a recently divorced working class Mexican-American turned successful entrepreneur.” Lopez will “portray a man who struggles to balance his demanding ex-wife, his 11-year-old son, his overbearing mother who just moved in, and his uncle, as well as his new role as a philanthropist ‘giving back’ by teaching history once a week at a night school.” Busy guy.
“I’m excited about my new show, couldn’t think a better group of people or better place to create than FX,” Lopez says. “Now to get ready … Back to Pilates!”
The series was ordered as a 10/90 deal, wherein FX has ordered 10 episodes from distributor Debmar-Mercury and, if the series meets a designated ratings threshold, it will trigger an additional 90-episode order. The network entered into the same unique distribution deal recently with Charlie Sheen‘s “Anger Management,” also distributed by Debmar-Mercury. Production on “Saint George” begins in August.
“George Lopez is an incredibly gifted actor-producer and one of the most talented comedians in the business,” Chuck Saftler, Executive Vice President, FX Networks says. “The 10/90 model requires a unique individual who has the ability to pull off this kind of daunting schedule. George is that guy and we couldn’t be happier that he chose FX as the home for his new project.
“Saint George” marks Lopez’s first starring role in a sitcom since his eponymous ABC series “George Lopez,” which aired from 2002-07. More recently, Lopez hosted a late-night talk show on TBS, “Lopez Tonight.”
