Finally, George Takei is getting the attention he deserves. Which is to say more than last week.
The 74-year-old “Star Trek” alum is the toast of the Internet after brokering a peace treaty between warring “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” actors William Shatner and Carrie Fisher and millions of fans who align themselves with each franchise.
But, guess what? George Takei has been awesome for a long time and we would be remiss in our duties if we didn’t point out at least five reasons why we love the guy:
1. He’s a giver: Takei is a tireless advocate for gay rights and for awareness of Japanese American issues. George and his parents were basically locked up by the U.S. government from 1942 until the end of World War II three years later, just for being Japanese.
2. He’s not afraid of that bully William Shatner: Takei has stood up to his former starship commander on many occasions, including at Shatner’s 2006 Comedy Central roast. (Careful: A bit of NSFW language ahead!)
3. He’s done a bit of stunt-voice work on “The Simpsons”: Most memorably as Akira, owner of a sushi shop that serves Homer some potentially toxic fugu fish.
4. He loves Howard Stern: Not only is Takei the show’s announcer, recording bumpers every few months to lead the show in and out of commercial, but he pays extended visits to the studio where he talks about everything from his latest acting gigs to intimate details of his relationship with husband Brad Altman.
5. He’s Mr. Sulu. Duh.
