Miley Cyrus. One Direction. Justin Bieber. Lady Gaga.
When you think of clear winners for Video of the Year at the 2013 YouTube Music Awards, surely one of those megastars would be among the list, right? They were each nominated at the event, held on Sunday (Nov. 3), so who won? Girls’ Generation.
Who, you ask? Exactly.
The South Korean girl group may have seemed like a major upset to American audiences who’ve never heard of them, taking home the Red Play Button statuette for their video “I Got s Boy,” but one look at the facts and the victory isn’t so shocking. So, who are they? Girls’ Generation is a nine-member group (Their names? Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun.) who’ve been making music together since 2007, when they released their first, self-titled album. Since then, they’ve made four full-length Korean albums and two Japanese, including 2013’s “I Got a Boy,” which spawned their winning video and hit No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums list and No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.
Check out their winning video (which, it must be said, is pretty spectacular, if you like pop music) below and let us know if you think they were worthy of taking home Video of the Year:
