Giuliana Rancic, E! television host, and husband Bill Rancic have been in the news lately because of Giuliana’s breast cancer diagnosis during a routine fertility check-up. When the double lumpectomy was unsuccessful, she chose to have a double mastectomy. Now, two weeks after surgery, she is back at work on E! and tells “Today” that having the goal of getting back to work was what helped her recovery.
“I feel great. I gotta be honest. I feel great, considering it has only been about two and a half weeks. But I still have a ways to go as far as the recovery,” says Rancic, to interviewer Matt Lauer.
But it wasn’t always easy and she doesn’t want to minimize the seriousness of the procedure.
“It was definitely hard,” says Rancic. “I knew this was going to be a tough surgery … but my gosh, up until about a week and a half ago, it was hell.”
One of the toughest things was after surgery, the morphine was making her sick to her stomach, but she was afraid to throw up because of how much that would hurt.
“I went into surgery about 4 p.m., I got out about 9:30 p.m. and by 4 a.m. I had to get off the morphine because I was so sick,” says Rancic. “I thought to myself, ‘Either I have to deal with the pain of the surgery or I’m going to have to throw up’ and the last thing I wanted to do was throw up considering I had just had my chest operated on and you have to engage all your chest muscles. It was not good.”
Things are still hard. She has limited mobility – she needs help getting out of bed, getting dressed, putting on a seatbelt. But Giuliana is happy to be back at work.
“It was nice having a goal. I think it helps you recover quicker. I found, for me, that was helpful. Having that light at the end of the tunnel,” says Rancic.
We’re glad to hear everything is going so well for her.
