There’s got to be a ton of pressure when your very first “Glee” musical number is a pseudo-duet with superstar Lea Michele on the Billy Joel classic “New York State of Mind.” Melissa Benoist, who plays the first Season 4 New Directions newbie Marley, says although her character was introduced in “The New Rachel,” she’s not taking the place of the NYADA freshman.
“I mean, it’s super intimidating because Lea is so crazy talented,” Benoist says of her debut in the “Glee” Season 4 premiere.
But just because she and Rachel (almost) sang together doesn’t mean Marley is the New Rachel. “I wasn’t even going to try to fill those shoes in the New Directions,” Benoist tells Zap2it. “I think Marley’s a different energy and very soulful.”
Ryan Murphy has tweeted plenty about Marley’s possible romance with fellow newbie Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), who isn’t in the glee club just yet but obviously will be soon, but Benoist was hesitant to say anything about the characters’ flirtation.
“I want it to be a surprise for everyone because I’ve had so much fun filming the episodes,” she teases, but does admit she has not filmed a kissing scene you can stop holding your breath for that one.
Speaking of Jake, what did you think of the bad boy — and the other new McKinley students Kitty (Becca Tobin) and Unique (“Glee Project” Season 1 runner up Alex Newell)?
Newell tells Zap2it that he’s not sure how long Unique will stick around McKinley, but he’s so excited to still be a part of the show. He was getting ready to go to Massachusetts for a part in a play when he got the call that he was becoming a member of the New Directions, and his one wish for Season 4 is to get a little romance in his life.
“Unique doesn’t have a boyfriend yet. I hope Unique has a boyfriend,” Newell says, listing “American Idol” contestant Joshua Ledet (“he’s so cute”) and Frank Ocean as potential candidates.
Meanwhile, Rachel has her own new guy in the form of Brody (Aussie actor Dean Geyer). Since we first saw him in a towel, it’s safe to say he’s going to be a little dangerous for Finchel fans. What did you think of the hot upperclassman?
