When we first watched “Glee’s” religion-themed “Grilled Cheesus” episode, we couldn’t help but do a double take during Kurt’s (Chris Colfer) flashbacks. The 13-year-old is almost impossibly identical to Colfer.
So was it a camera trick? CGI? Old Colfer family home-video footage? Colfer’s secret little brother?
Nope. Little Kurt, who is just as fabulous as big Kurt, was played by Adam Kolkin, a high school student from Orange County with no relation to Colfer. Even the “Glee” casting directors were taken aback when they met the lookalike. “They all kept saying, ‘Oh my God, oh my God,” Kolkin tells the O.C. Register.
Though he didn’t share any scenes with Colfer, Kolkin did get to meet him when Colfer stopped by the graveyard location just to say hello.
Kolkin doesn’t have a singing part in tonight’s episode, but he was asked to raise his voice for the casting directors. “I had prepared ‘Walking on Sunshine,'” he says. “They were really surprised.”
Just because he doesn’t sing in “Grilled Cheesus” doesn’t mean he won’t sing later. We do expect to see Kolkin make a return to the show. A flashback episode is currently in the works according to EW, and while casting directors are seeking young versions of Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Amber Riley, and Mark Salling, we’re not sure they’ll be able to find anyone this good.
Kolkin certainly set the bar high.
