It was mentor-palooza on the Grammys’ stage this year, with Usher joining forces with Justin Bieber and Dr. Dre teaming up with his protege, Eminem.
Bieber’s performance kicked off with a video circa 2007 performing “U Got it Bad” for his future mentor. It was followed up with an on-stage pep talk of sorts from “Oh My God” singer that unfortunately came off as more awkward than heartwarming.
The Biebs then treated us to an acoustic snippet of “Baby,” which was immediately followed with what can best be described as “Mortal Kombat meets ‘Grease.'” The teen dream dodged acrobatic men and fire-breathers until the adorable Jaden Smith popped out of nowhere to join in the “Never Say Never” performance.
Our hearts immediately melted seeing those two mini-moguls in the making back to back rocking out. Not to mention audience shots of Will and Jada Smith looking like proud soccer parents. The cutest award of the night goes to…
Usher then took the stage with a predictable, but enjoyable rendition of “Oh My God.” We found ourselves waiting for Bieber to join him, which he eventually did for a few brief dance moves.
Later on in the evening, Eminem took the stage with Rihanna to bring down the house with “Love the Way You Lie,” and morphed into “I Need a Doctor” alongside the lesser known Skylar Grey.
After dimming the lights on stage for a moment, Dr. Dre emerged to join in on the song in his first television performance in over 10 years.
Their performance was good, but much like Rihanna’s contribution to “Love the Way You Lie,” we found ourselves enjoying Grey’s portion of the song just a little more enjoyable than Em or Dre’s. Forgive us, maybe it will take a few more listens to fully appreciate.
Eminem did walk away from the night with a Grammy in the “Best Rap Album” category for “Recovery.”
