When “We Are Young” was released as a single in 2011, it didn’t get much attention. While debuting at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it quickly disappeared. It is likely that nothing more would have happened with the song if it were not for a little show called “Glee.”
“Glee” covered the song in December of 2011 during the “Hold on to Sixteen” episode of the show’s third season. The tune represents the victory celebration for New Directions after winning Sectionals and thus was a show-stopper featuring most of the show’s cast.
Sales of “We Are Young” jumped over 1000 percent following the episode.
Fun. got a second spike in sales during the 2012 Super Bowl. Chevrolet used the tune in the background of one of its high-profile commercials, and “We Are Young” finally made it to the number 1 spot on Billboard.
Thus, pop culture may have been responsible for fun.’s two Grammy wins. But you know neither “Glee” nor Chevrolet would have noticed the song if it weren’t so great.
