The film, which just made its premiere at Telluride to positive reviews, is looking like it will be a big Oscar contender in 2014. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts who get stranded in space after their shuttle is damaged, the simple premise is said to be magnified by Cuaron’s advanced cinematography camera techniques. The experience of watching the movie, which will be released in 3D and IMAX, has been likened to actually being in space.
The trailer gives a clear sense of that experience, as it’s hard not to be infected by Bullock’s character’s fear and claustrophobia. “Gravity” is taking a concept of nightmares and turning it into a nightmare-inducing movie in its own right. The flick is due in theaters on Oct. 4.
