Being the most-followed user on Twitter is not without its perks. When Lady Gaga recently tweeted for fans to get in touch with Harry Reid about scheduling a vote to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the Senate Majority Leader totally @-tagged her — at least sort of.
]]>ban on openly gay Americans from serving the military, urged followers to contact Reid, and @HarryReid was quick to respond.
“@ladygaga There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so,” read the post, with a link to an article about his scheduling the vote for the following week.
Democracy in action! Well, kind of. @HarryReid is not the senator’s official Twitter account — that would be the verified @SenatorReid — it’s the “Official Twitter account of Harry Reid’s 2010 re-election campaign.” In other words, the tweet in question was probably typed out by a campaign volunteer.
And the even sadder realization from the exchange? The majority leader of the United States Senate only has 10,813 followers.
