“He had a breakdown, in effect. He’s desperately trying to find happiness insomuch as he’s lost his daughter,” Scott tells Zap2it and other reporters on a set visit. “I think what he does is he tries to get on with his life, but throughout the course of that he discovers things that are completely surprising to him, and his relationships with other people develop and change a lot as well. You’ll find very surprising relationships happening as well with Norman.”
As Norman tries to get over the death of his daughter Letha (Penelope Mitchell), he also gets drawn back into his relationship with Olivia (Famke Janssen). Scott says their “relationship goes through a metamorphosis” as “the shackles have kind of been taken off” and Norman spends more time with Olivia.
“I always thought of Olivia, at the heart of this massive manipulator and dark enigmatic mysterious creature, was a woman who was desperately in love with Norman, and that still is true, regardless of her actions and what she’s done,” he says. “They’re both in love with each other, so that relationship will take on a different twist in Season 2. I can’t tell you what, but it’s interesting.”
In addition to Norman’s relationship with Olivia taking a different turn, Scott also says audiences will learn more about his character’s past in later episodes. “How do you know what’s going to happen to Norman? How do you know where he comes from? You have no idea. What’s his blood?” Scott asks.
“He rediscovers himself and rediscovers an energy within himself that I don’t think he’d be able to overcome [after death],” Scott says of Norman. “I think his eyes begin to be opened to a lot of things going on in the town. He demands to be part of it as opposed to being an observer.”
“Hemlock Grove” Season 2 premieres Friday (July 11) on Netflix.
