“Homeland” star Mandy Patinkin sat down with “CBS This Morning” Wednesday (Oct. 23) and one of the things he talked about was his iconic movie role Inigo Montoya in “The Princess Bride.” And he revealed his favorite line from the movie:
“There are two lines from ‘The Princess Bride’ that I love. One everyone is very familiar with — ‘Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.’ That’s the popular one,” says Patinkin.
“But I heard another line from the movie about five, six years ago. … I went up to my hotel room to have dinner before I went to the theater, my wife was there and she had the movie on. It was at the end of the movie. Right when Buttercup falls into Andre’s arms, when Robin falls in to Andre’s arms.
“The Man in Black, Cary, is sitting there asking me to be the Dread Pirate Roberts and … 55-year-old Mandy is watching the 30-some-year-old Mandy say a line that I said, it’s in the movie, but I didn’t really hear it as a young man.
“And for me that’s the most potent line in the whole film. And that is, ‘I have been in the revenge business so long. Now that it’s over, I do not know what to do with the rest of my life.’
“And I love that line. I love it for all of us. Because the purpose of revenge, in my opnion, is completely worthless and pointless and the purpose of existence is to embrace our fellow human beings and not be vengeful and turn our darkness into light. So that’s the line I love from the movie.”
