Fans who really wanted “How I Met Your Mother” to end a different way will get their wish on the show’s series DVD set.
No, the show isn’t including the fan-made ending that circulated online after the show’s divisive finale on Monday (March 31), but per co-creator Carter Bays, you will be able to see a modified coda to the show on the DVD/Blu-ray set, which goes on sale in the fall.
Bays explained the idea, and defended his and co-creator Craig Thomas’ choice, in a series of tweets Friday (April 4), shortly after Deadline broke the news about a second ending. Being a comedy writer, Bays opened with a joke: “How was everybody’s week?”
“If you didn’t like the finale, I guess that happens,” he writes. “We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends.”
In late March, Bays writes, he and Thomas sat in an editing room “trying to decide between two very different endings.”
“We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too,” he says, so it’s going on the DVD box set (which, incidentally, is packaged to look like Barney’s Playbook).
Bays also sent out congratulations to his former boss David Letterman and closed with a nod to fans: “Lastly, thank you again to everyone who has made #HIMYM a part of their lives. You mean the world to us.”
