Ladies and gentlemen, we have finally met the mother! Sort of. During “Farhampton,” the Season 8 premiere of “How I Met Your Mother,” we finally got to the moment where Ted first encounters the yellow umbrella-wielding woman whom we know to be the mother of his children.
Although it was during a flash-forward, “HIMYM” EP Carter Bays promises reporters at an early screening of the episode that we’ll see much more of their meeting during the possible final season of the CBS sitcom.
“That moment is something we’ve been building to for a very long time, and we’ll see more of that moment as the series goes on towards its ending, whenever that happens,” he says.
No fakeouts this time. “That’s the moment where he’s going to meet her,” Bays confirms.
What he and fellow EP Craig Thomas won’t confirm, however, is whether the actress who plays the mother has been cast or not. “Ultimately when we do cast the actress who’s the mother it’s going to have to be shrouded in secrecy, so if it already happened, if we already did it, I sort of don’t want to say,” Thomas says.
But let’s be honest — nothing’s a secret these days. “You would’ve found out,” jokes Bays.
Bays and Thomas say they’re not certain whether the series will end with Ted meeting the mother or we’ll see a little bit of their courtship, but they do know that they will let us know how Ted and the mother both found their way to the same Long Island train station.
“We’ve jumped deep into that day now,” Thomas says. “We’re still going to find A to B within that day as well as A to B within where we are and how did Barney wind up getting married?”
That non-linear time structure tends to complicate things. “We like jumping to endings and then not telling you the middle. It’s very sort of awkward storytelling now that I think about it,” Thomas says with a laugh. “But we enjoy it and we’re going to fill in all the blanks on that day for sure.”
The meeting is monumental, and it’s going to happen soon, Thomas says. “That day is the biggest day in the history of the group, obviously. That’s where the series is heading and we’re getting close.”
“HIMYM” airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on CBS.
