Ian McKellen is finally done being Gandalf — again. The actor managed to snag a starring role in both Peter Jackson‘s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, but at long last he donned his character’s beard and token grey wizard hat for the last time.
“Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I’m feeling very sad right now,” Jackson writes on Facebook along with the above photo.
Thinking about the fact that “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” first came out in 2001 definitely makes us feel a bit old. “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” the final film in “The Hobbit” trilogy, is slated for release on Dec. 17, 2014. Fortunately we still have a year and a half more until we have to say goodbye to Gandalf, Bilbo and the rest of the Middle-Earth gang for the last time — and then, of course, we’ll always have the extended editions to look forward to.
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” comes out on Dec. 13.
