“Inside Llewyn Davis” looks better and better with each passing trailer. The latest look at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner focuses on its title character (Oscar Isaac) as he struggles to find work in the music scene in 1960s-era New York City.
Isaac gives a powerful performance as Llewyn Davis, but it’s the supporting cast that also is intriguing. Isaac and Carey Mulligan reunite for the first time since “Drive,” albeit in very different roles. Justin Timberlake plays against type as Mulligan’s character’s husband, who is a folk singer like Llewyn. Rounding out the ensemble are Garrett Hedlund and John Goodman.
Despite the impressive array of actors in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the movie looks like it gets its soul from its music. Directors Joel and Ethan Coen reunite with music producer T Bone Burnett for the fourth time on this project, and “Inside Llewyn Davis” also counts Mumford & Sons lead singer (and Mulligan’s husband) Marcus Mumford as an associate music producer. The film features music performed by Timberlake, Isaac, Mumford, Mulligan and the Punch Brothers.
“Inside Llewyn Davis” is due in theaters on Dec. 6.
