Remember when James Franco co-hosted the Oscars with Anne Hathaway and totally failed? Failed so bad that even people like our grandmothers (who did not learn to love the guy watching “Freaks and Geeks” a decade ago) were talking about what a talentless so-and-so the guy is?
Well, that’s old news. Here’s what we didn’t know: Franco himself knew he was headed for a massive fail.
“In the last week, when we really started focusing on the script for the live show and did a run-through,” says Franco in a new Playboy interview, “I said to the producer, ‘I don’t know why you hired me, because you haven’t given me anything. I just don’t think this stuff’s going to be good.'”
“I felt kind of trapped in that material,” he continues. “I felt, This is not my boat, I’m just a passenger, but I’m going down and there’s no way out.”
Turns out his instincts were spot on. Franco took a beating from critics and TV watchers alike and still, apparently, can’t live down the one low point what has been an otherwise stellar few years for his career.
In the new interview, the multi-tasking polymath talks about why he won’t host the Oscars again, why he quit Twitter and his breakup with longtime girlfried Ahna O’Reilly.
