Dr. Drew Pinsky, who once helped Jeff Conaway battle his substance abuse problems on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” is “deeply saddened to learn of Jeff’s condition,” he said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with Jeff and his family.”
Conaway is currently in a coma at an Encino, Calif., hospital after being found unconscious on May 11. It’s suspected that Conaway overdosed, though a rep for the actor would not confirm what drugs Conaway may have been using. Conaway is best known for his role as Kenickie in the 1978 movie version of “Grease,” though he also logged many years on TV as a member of the “Taxi” cast.
Pinsky, an addiction medicine specialist, has made something of a career of helping celebrities with substance abuse problems. His VH1 show has featured stars — from Dennis Rodman to Janice Dickinson to Tom Sizemore — attempting to get or stay clean. But this isn’t the only recent tragic news associated with one of Pinsky’s former patients.
In March, former Alice in Chains bassist and “Celebrity Rehab”-ber Mike Starr was found dead from an overdose in Utah. In April, Brandon Davis — another show alum — was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
Conaway’s rep tells the Associated Press that the actor is not expected to recover.
