Jennifer Hudson took the witness stand Monday (April 23) in the murder trial of her brother-in-law, who’s accused of killing Hudson’s mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.
Hudson is in Chicago for the trial of William Balfour, who was married to Hudson’s sister Julia. Prosecutors said in their opening statement that Balfour, who was estranged from Julia Hudson at the time of the October 2008 murders, couldn’t bear the thought of Julia seeing other men, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Jennifer Hudson was among the first witnesses to take the stand in the trial, recounting how she heard about the killings — she was in Florida at the time and became concerned when her mother, Darnell Donerson, didn’t send a text that morning. Her sister later called her with the news.
She also cried while telling the jury how she warned her sister not to marry Balfour.
“I would tell Julia over and over again not to marry William,” she said. “None of us — myself, my mother, or my brother — we did not like how he treated her, and I didn’t like how he treated my nephew.”
The trial is expected to last about a month.
