Marvel’s superhero teamup “The Avengers” is close to adding Jeremy Renner to the mix.
The Oscar-nominated star of “The Hurt Locker” is in negotiations to play Hawkeye, a villain-turned-hero who in the Avengers comics becomes part of the team not long after its formation. Marvel has yet to confirm the negotiations, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision.
The “Avengers” movie, to be directed by Joss Whedon, will gather together Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as well as Renner’s Hawkeye character. In the comics, the Hulk is also a member of the Avengers, but it’s unclear if the character — or rather, Ed Norton, who played Bruce Banner in “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008 — will be part of the movie as well.
Renner’s next film is the Ben Affleck-directed drama “The Town,” which is due for release in September. He’s also attached to “There Will Be Blood” director Paul Thomas Anderson’s next project, but it doesn’t have a start date yet.
“The Avengers” is slated for a 2012 release.
