Jesse Tyler Ferguson is ready to tie the knot! He proposed to longtime boyfriend Justin Mikita, who accepted. But since gay marriage isn’t legal yet, the couple has started a new line of bow ties called Tie the Knot, and will donate the proceeds to gay rights charities.
The couple announced their engagement news and the bow tie line in an adorable YouTube video that began with a song listing the six states (plus Washington D.C.) that allow gay marriage: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
The “Modern Family” star struggles for a word to describe his betrothed before settling on fiance. “It’s true, I popped the big Q,” Ferguson says. “I said yes,” Mikita chimes in.
Basically, Ferguson and Mikita say they created the collection of bow ties inspired by art and fashion because they want to be able to marry some day. “We want our interpersonal relationship to be acknowledged in a union formalized via a wedding ceremony,” Ferguson says.
The bow ties will be available in November, and the proceeds will be donated to organizations fighting for gay rights.
