UPDATE: It was still a good night for “JKL,” but not a victorious one. In the fast national ratings, Kimmel ended up second to “The Tonight Show” in both viewers (3.27 million to 3.1 million and adults 18-49 (1.08 million to 887,000). It beat “The Late Show” (2.88 million, 683,000 adults 18-49) in both counts.

Jimmy Kimmel‘s first night at an earlier time worked out pretty well.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” in its first airing at 11:35 p.m. after years of running at midnight, beat its late-night rivals “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman” in the metered-market ratings Tuesday (Jan. 8).
“JKL,” which featured Jennifer Aniston giving the host a haircut and a performance by No Doubt, posted a 2.8 rating/8 share in the 56 metered markets, beating Letterman’s 2.7/7 and Leno’s 2.4/6. Kimmel’s show also scored the best adults 18-49 rating in the 25 markets where the demographic is measured.
None of that is very surprising, given how much ABC promoted Kimmel’s move to the earlier time period. And ABC probably won’t be sending out any press releases proclaiming Kimmel “the new king of late night,” as NBC infamously did after Conan O’Brien‘s first “Tonight Show.” (Oops.)
