Fans are very curious about the direction J.J. Abrams plans to take the “Star Wars” franchise in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Will he bring back the original cast? Base the story off one of the popular “Star Wars” novels? Try something completely new? There are definitely more questions than answers.
Abrams’ other sci-fi epic, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” hits theaters today, and the director visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote the film. Talk inevitably turned to “Star Wars,” and Abrams gave a status update on the project.
“It’s obviously very early days,” he says. “We’re working on the story. We just don’t want to screw it up. We’re trying to figure it out right now. That’s kind of where we are.”
He adds, “We’re sort of having a little bit of writer’s block trying to get through it, but we’ll figure it out.”
Whether that’s the case or not is unclear, but it certainly set up some excellent comedic fodder. Kimmel then opened the late night show up to fan suggestions for the movie’s plot, which featured some surprise appearances from Billy Dee Williams and William Shatner.
“I’ve got an idea. The next ‘Star Wars,’ nothing but Lando,” Williams suggests. “Two hours of Lando and beautiful ladies making love, sweet love in the galaxy.”
Shatner had a similarly self-absorbed idea for the “Episode VII” plot. “You know, this Han Solo and that Lando? Captain Kirk! No rules, no search. Road trip of a lifetime kind of thing,” he says. “That actually sounds pretty great,” Abrams responds with a laugh.
The one thing they all agree on? Princess Leia and Chewbacca should totally “do it” in the new movie. “Star Wars: Episode VII” is slated for a summer 2015 release.
