In an interview with People magazine (promoting his new memoir “Welcome to My World,” of course) Weir says, “With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I
hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story.”

I don’t think sex and relationships necessarily have to go together.” The flamboyant skater went on to address the media attention regarding his sexuality. “A lot of the gays got downright angry about my silence. But pressure is the last thing that would make me want to ‘join’ a community.” Weir admits he did feel pressure from gay websites that “couldn’t figure out why I was such a jerk that I wouldn’t take it [being gay].” He also talks about his childhood, when he was often mistaken for a girl. In middle school, he says he was often called “homo” and “faggot” and mentions that he had an affair with another skater that he would only refer to as “Alex.” Weir declares, “I’m not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What’s wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become.”
