Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge went on what is expected to be her last official appearance before going on “maternity leave” when she traveled to Southampton, England on Thursday (June 13) to christen a luxury cruise ship.
Kate is the “godmother” of the Royal Princess, the latest ship in the British cruise line Princess Cruises’ fleet. She christened the liner by blessing it and releasing a magnum of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne to smash on the ship’s hull. The Royal Marine Band and Irish Guard pipers were on hand to play.
“I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” the Duchess declares.
Ship christenings are traditionally done by female British royals, though other people have gotten in on the fun over the years.
This is Kate’s last official engagement before the baby comes, though she’s expected to be a part of the Royal family’s Trooping of the Color ceremony on Saturday, June 15, which celebrates the Queen’s birthday. That is not considered an “official” engagement.
