There’s nothing like a well-timed reference to Kelis’ infamous “Milkshake,” especially in a seemingly serious context like a spelling bee, so that makes a judge’s quotation of the early 2000s song in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee even better.
Eventual champion Sriram Hathwar was tasked with spelling the word feijoada (a South American stew), and when he asked the proctor to use it in a sentence, the judge started reciting the words that have been burned in all of our brains since 2003.
Well, maybe not Hathwar’s, since he was 3 when the song was released.
“Tabitha discovered that while her milkshake brought all the boys to the yard — oh boy, wrong sentence,” joked the judge.
