President Barack Obama became the first president in history to voice his support for same-sex marriage on Wednesday (May 8). And celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Ellen DeGeneres were quick to voice their support of his decision to stand up for marriage equality.
On her blog, Kardashian — who recently exercised her right to marry and quickly un-marry — writes, “This is such a huge step forward in our country’s fight for civil rights and I hope that today this will give hope to so many young people across the country.”
On Twitter Ellen writes, “Thank you President @BarackObama for your beautiful and brave words. I’m overwhelmed.”
“Glee” star Jane Lynch also added her praise, tweeting, “Pretty darn happy today. Thanks Mr President, for supporting the dignity of my family and so many others!”
“A fierce day for my gays and my prez @BarackObama – way 2 stand up 4 luv for ALL!” writes Tyra Banks.
Former “Growing Pains” star Kirk Cameron, it turns out, doesn’t have an active Twitter account. In March, Cameron told CNN’s Piers Morgan gay marriage was “destructive” to “the foundations of civilization.”
