Kings of Leon brought the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards into the grownup zone Sunday (Nov. 10), taking “don’t make a scene, dear” literally with their performance of “Beautiful War” off the band’s new album, “Mechanical Bull.”
There was no twerking; there were no pole dancers and no naked painted ladies, and no one descending from the sky dressed in mirrored prisms and wrapped in a maypole. There were just beautiful lyrics, expertly-crafted musicianship and a tiny bit of pyrotechnics — because after all, it’s still an MTV awards show.
Performers like Austin Mahone — who helped open the show from a live New York stage, rife with elaborate choreography and half-hearted lip syncing — should take note. Sometimes it’s just about the music. And that’s OK. Thanks, Kings.
