If “Game of Thrones” viewers notice that Jon Snow looks a bit beefier in Season 4 than the last time he was seen shirtless, they won’t be wrong. Kit Harington put a lot of effort into crafting those incredible abs for his new movie “Pompeii.”
“That involved four weeks prior to the movie’s starting, of going to this room with our wonderful stunt people and training very hard every day, and learning swordfights with one sword, and two swords,” Harington tells Vanity Fair.
It also required some pretty intensive workouts. Every day Harington and co-star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje would do four-hour workouts that included two hours of fight training with weapons, an hour of weight lifting and an hour of cardio. Akinnuoye-Agbaje also says there was an 1,800-calorie diet “designed specifically for our bodies to be attuned to lose fat and pop out muscles.”
Well, it worked, and viewers aren’t the only ones reaping the rewards. Because of all the effort Harington put into training for “Pompeii,” he became a much better swordsman for “Game of Thrones.” Considering all the fighting at the Wall in Season 4, that’s definitely good for everyone.
“Neil Marshall, who directs some of the episodes of ‘Game of Thrones,’ called me to say thank you,” director Paul W.S. Anderson tells VF. “Because when we gave Kit back to them for the new season, he said, ‘Kit has become a really great swordsman. Thank you so much.’ So they definitely benefited from the hard work he did for our movie.”
Harington adds, “In ‘Game of Thrones,’ the fights are far more, kind of earthy, gritty, and practical. They last about four or five beats, and then someone’s dead. That’s kind of how we do it in ‘Thrones.’ And also, I’m holding a big, broad sword, it’s a different period of history — or fantasy.”
Here’s hoping that Season 4 has an increase in Jon Snow shirtless scenes as well to take advantage of Harington’s abs while they’re in tip-top shape.
