During the Television Critics Association winter press tour earlier this month, Discovery Channel threw a party on the hotel’s back lawn, themed to its scripted gold-mining miniseries “Klondike,” which premieres Monday (Jan. 20).
On hand to tape a special “Klondike”-centric episode of “Gold Rush: The Dirt“ was “Gold Rush” executive producer Christo Doyle and teenage miner Parker Schnabel. In front of a temporary Alaskan saloon was a local horseman and his equine pal, Magi. Doyle hopped up to shoot an intro for “The Dirt,” but Schnabel satisfied himself with just saying hello.
Before the horseplay, they sat down with Zap2it to discuss the meeting between “Game of Thrones” and “Klondike” star Richard Madden and Schnabel.
“When Richard Madden showed up,” Doyle says, “I went to his trailer and said, ‘Hey, are you a ‘Gold Rush’ fan?’ And he said, ‘Is Parker Schnabel here?’ I’m like, ‘Come on, you’re acting. You’ve got to be acting.’ And he said, ‘No.’
“He asked me, ‘Was Parker Schnabel in London a couple of weeks ago?’ He saw Parker on the street in London. He is a Parker Schnabel fan. The segment we shot with Parker and Richard was Richard asking Parker gold-mining questions. Richard Madden was starstruck.”
“What’s ‘Game of Thrones’?” quips Schnabel. “I’d seen ‘Game of Thrones,’ a few episodes. I’m not a big fan. It takes a lot for somebody to impress me. I’d seen the first episode of ‘Klondike,’ and he does a great job. I’m looking forward to seeing the next couple.
“I’ve always been really interested in the [real story behind ‘Klondike’]. I took an interest in it from a young age, because my grandpa’s my idol and a gold miner. I’ve read a lot of books about it. I know this story really well, and they did an amazing job of it.”
The “Klondike” edition of “Gold Rush: The Dirt” premieres at 7 p.m. ET, followed by a new episode of “Gold Rush” and then the premiere of “Klondike.” Parts two and three of the miniseries air at 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
