“American Idol” winner Kris Allen appears has definitely progressed beyond the street performer part of his career… but he didn’t get the memo. On Sunday night, Allen tweeted his fans to tell them to come see him play a few songs on the Santa Monica Pier.
“How bout the peir in Santa Monica? 8 pm. You…me…couple tunes…ocean breeze…birds pooping on us. It’s gonna be great,” he tweeted, expecting a casual gathering of fans and music. That’s not what he got.
In fact, so many fans came out to see Allen’s impromptu performance, it was shut down by the police! Allen performed his song “Rooftops,” Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around Comes Around,” and more. He was in the middle of a brand new song called “Should I” when pier security showed up to kick him off the pier for doing a free show without a permit.
Contrary to rumors, Allen was not actually arrested or put in handcuffs. Of course, that didn’t stop his fans from getting #freekrisallen to trend on Twitter.
“Well I wasn’t expecting anything from tonight but that’s not what I expected. Getting stopped by the cops never crossed my mind,” he tweeted after the ordeal. “Thanks to everyone that came out. Had a good time. And to the people that just stopped…thanks for stopping. Btw I didn’t mean any disrespect to other street performers out there. I respect them so much for what they do.”
