If you missed out on celebrating National Donut Day, you can make up for lost time — and give yourself some serious heartburn — with a dish served up by Chicken Charlie’s at the San Diego County Fair: Krispy Kreme sloppy joe with a deep-fried bacon-wrapped pickle on the side.
Fair attendees have been flooding social media with photos of the sugary, greasy concoction, which puts Dunkin’ Donuts’ new glazed donut breakfast sandwich to shame.
The sloppy joe meat is served with grated cheese between two halves of a Krispy Kreme glazed donut. And thrown in for good measure is a pickle that has been wrapped in bacon and deep-fried. It’s served on a stick for easy eating.
Other fried concoctions served by Chicken Charlie’s include fried Kool-Aid balls, friend Klondike bars, fried Trix cereal and fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. For the health conscious fairgoer, they also offer fried veggies. Uh … yum? The deep-frying of otherwise bad for you anyway food items is certainly not a new trend. The Texas State Fair once offered deep-fried bubble gum. No, Chicken Charlie’s is just escalating the fired fair food movement to a whole new level. Talk about you ever day revolutionaries.
